Maj. Gen. John A. Logan declared that Decoration Day should be observed on May 30. It is believed that date was chosen because flowers would be in bloom all over the country. The first large observance was held that year at Arlington National Cemetery, across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C. The ceremonies centered around the mourning-draped veranda of the Arlington mansion, once the home of Gen. Robert E. Lee. Various Washington officials, including Gen. and Mrs. Ulysses S. Grant, presided over the ceremonies. After speeches, children from the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Orphan Home and members of the GAR made their way through the cemetery, strewing flowers on both Union and Confederate graves, reciting prayers and singing hymns. Local Observances Claim To Be First Local springtime tributes to the Civil War dead already had been held in various places. One of the first occurred in Columbus, Miss., April 25, 1866, when a group of women visited a cemetery to decorate the graves of Confederate soldiers who had fallen in battle at Shiloh. Nearby were the graves of Union soldiers, neglected because they were the enemy. Disturbed at the sight of the bare graves, the women placed some of their flowers on those graves, as well. Today, cities in the North and the South claim to be the birthplace of Memorial Day in 1866. Both Macon and Columbus, Ga., claim the title, as well as Richmond, Va. The village of Boalsburg, Pa., claims it began there two years earlier. A stone in a Carbondale, Ill., cemetery carries the statement that the first Decoration Day ceremony took place there on April 29, 1866. Carbondale was the wartime home of Gen. Logan. Approximately 25 places have been named in connection with the origin of Memorial Day, many of them in the South where most of the war dead were buried. Official Birthplace Declared In 1966, Congress and President Lyndon Johnson declared Waterloo, N.Y., the “birthplace” of Memorial Day. There, a ceremony on May 5, 1866, honored local veterans who had fought in the Civil War. Businesses closed and residents flew flags at half-... [ Full reading ] Comments: 5 Remembering Nevaeh! Sun May 23, 2010 4:12 pm by Justice4all I'm sad right now because it was a year ago around 6:30 on a Sunday evening when Nevaeh Buchanan disappeared. Nevaeh, we will always remember you and pray that your killer is someday brought to justice. R.I.P. Monroe's Little Angel! ![]() Here is a great tribute made around the time of Nevaeh's funeral last year. And here is a beautiful tribute I found on youtube. Comments: 3 John Gardner Interview Fri Apr 30, 2010 5:20 pm by Justice4all Here are the videos of John Gardner's interview with CBS 8 in San Diego. Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Gardner was arrested on Sunday, February 28 for the murder of Chelsea King. He said he wanted to confess to the murders of Chelsea and Amber Dubois on Monday and tell police where their bodies were, but he couldn't get a hold of an attorney. They found Chelsea on Tuesday, and then on Wednesday Gardner said he wanted to plead guilty, but for some reason you have to plead not guilty before you can plead guilty. He claims he led authorities to Amber's body because he felt bad, but the district attorney said there was a deal in place where Gardner taking them to Amber's remains could not be used against him. Gardner makes it sound like he wanted to confess everything because he felt bad, but lawyers and circumstances kept getting in the way. He claims he tried to commit suicide on February 13, which was the anniversary of Amber's killing. If he felt so bad about killing Amber, why did he threaten to kill Candice Moncayo in December, why did he kill Chelsea, and why did he laugh and say "good try" when he was asked if there were any other victims? If there are any other victims, I don't think he will confess to those crimes unless police find evidence that links him to those crimes. Once he is busted, he will all of a sudden feel remorse and will probably go on TV and say that he also felt bad about those victims and wanted to confess, but his lawyers wouldn't let him say anything.
