Joseph Newman, who made headlines more than 20 years ago for marrying Jarred Harrell's mother and for marrying his 8-year-old sister, sent a one-page letter to Channel 4 talking about his former stepson and Somer Thompson.

Harrell has been named a person of interest in the killing of Somer, who was found dead in a landfill in October after disappearing on her way home from school.

Harrell is facing 55 charges involving possession and production of child pornography and lewd molestation unrelated to the Somer Thompson case.

Newman, Harrell's controversial former stepfather, predicted years ago that the world would end in 2012.

"UFOs are real and they are going to play a part in this," Newman said at the time. "And they are giving warnings to the world now."

Yeah, i'm confused too - Jarred's step dad married an 8 yr old??? If Jarred was exposed to this, it kinda explains some things, but doesn't by ANY means condone his actions...

What parents do in moderation, their children will do in excess - i ALWAYS try to remember that as I raise my children... this seems to be a prime example of that little phrase...

He definitely comes from a freakish background. I agree with you, Tish.......that is no excuse for what's he done. They wrote off his child porn addiction as just a phase. So they only aided him in his fantasies early on.

It is a sick story. Newman married Harrell's eight-year-old sister. Here is an article about it and a couple paragraphs snipped from another article. If the quote from Harrell's mom below is really what she said, she is officially worse than Cindy Anthony.

Wacky Inventor's Connection To A Notorious Local Murder

A wacky inventor and a person of interest in a local murder share a bizarre connection. Doomsday prophet and debunked inventor Joseph Newman was once Jarred Harrell's step-father.

When Harrell was a child, Newman married both his mother and 8-year old sister. Newman claimed that God told him to do it.

That didn't hold and the kids went to live with their father. Harrell moved back with his mom when the two divorced five years later.

Newman made predictions that the world will end in 2012.

He made the biggest splash when he claimed to have invented a perpetual motion machine. He claimed the machine could do incredible things, and that landed him a spot on the Tonight Show. However scientific testing destroyed those claims.

Newman tried for years to get a machine patented, but was denied on several occasions before giving up that quest. He still maintains a website touting the machine.

Harrell is facing child porn and molestation charges. He is also a person of interest in the Somer Thompson murder.

One article from the "Mobile Press Register" quotes Newman talking about when he will consummate the marriage with the girl. He says it is "her business, my business and God's business."

The Clarion Ledger out of Jackson, Mississippi talked with Harrel's mom back in 1989. It said: "Asked if she would mind having her daughter's children fathered by Newman, {She} said. 'I wouldn't think it's something I've thought about, but its nothing I have a problem with.'"

Here is a link to an old article I found about Newman losing custody of the girl. It says he was still legally married to his wife of 14 years when he married his secretary, Anne Mizelle Harrell, and her 8-year-old daughter.

A man who lives near Somer Thompson's home was arrested for child porn.

They said it hasn't got anything to do with Somer's case...but...I wonder if he knew Harrell???

Attorney: Watkins was trying to help Somer's investigation

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.-- Charles Watkins' attorney said Watkins' downloaded child pornography to try and help find Somer Thompson's killer.

The 64-year-old Watkins made his first appearance at the federal courthouse Thursday morning.

The grandfather of six is charged with receipt of child pornography and possession of child porn. Authorities say they discovered it investigating Somer Thompson's murder.

Action News' Kristen Cosby was the only reporter to talk with Watkins outside of the courthouse. He told Cosby he didn't want to talk.

Marcus Barnett, Watkins' attorney, did talk to Cosby.

"He's mortified. He's distraught. He doesn't understand how this happened," said Barnett.

Barnett admitted his client knew Somer Thompson. They were neighbors. Barnett said Somer was friends with Watkins' grandkids and played at his house.

Barnett said Watkins was trying to help investigators find Somer.

"He asked how he could help and they said well she may be involved in some child pornography issues, so he went online looking for her. And he would look at images, from what I understand according to the indictment, no its not Somer- click delete, click delete," said Barnett. "He was legitimately trying to help and its in the 'no good deed goes unpunished school.'"

The judge let Watkins out on bond Thursday. Watkins is not considered a flight risk. Under the conditions of his bond, he may not have access to the internet or a computer in his house, he may not be around children and he must be at home between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. Watkins may use a computer only at work for work purposes. That computer has pornography protections on it. He is only allowed to go to work, church, court and his attorney's office.

Watkins blew his wife, Mary Anne, a kiss in federal court. She was with him as he bonded out and she agreed to be his custodian.

Watkins works for a local paper company.

His next court date has not been set.

I don't know if I buy his excuse. I doubt that the person who killed Somer would post pictures of her online for any reason. It would be too easy to trace the IP of the computer they were posted from.

My feelings tell me he's a pervert...it will be interesting to see when he started his own "investigation".

The Somer Thompson Foundation kicks off tomorrow with a day of music at the Jacksonville Landing.
"In a way, it's my obligation to give back," said Molly Hatchet guitarist Bobby Ingram.
The Jacksonville rockers will be playing their song "Fly On Wings Of Angels", written for the 7-year-old Orange Park girl who was murdered last October, tomorrow night at the Landing.

Somer Thompson's mother Deina says her heart remains broken, but she's working to make life better. "By god, I can't change the past, so all I can do is try to live the present and change the future," said Thompson.

The Somer Jam concert with 6 musical acts is tomorrow from 3 to 11 p.m. at the Landing.

The music is free but donations to the Somer Thompson Foundation will be accepted.

Harrell charged with murder, "major development" to be announced at noon in Somer Thompson death

Jarred Harrell, named a person of interest in the 2009 death of 7-year-old Somer Thompson of Orange Park, has been charged with premeditated murder.

Harrell, 24, already in the Clay County Jail on child pornography charges, was arrested anew Thursday. He also was charged with sexual battery on a victim under 12 and lewd and lascivious battery, according to a Sheriff's Office listing released early today of Thursday arrests.

The listing did not say who Harrell was accused of killing, but the Sheriff's Office said in a news release early this morning that it would announce a "major development" at a press conference at noon about the Somer Thompson case.

He's been charged with premeditated murder.........I'm anxious to see the news conference at noon. I feel like I could get sick, this 6' 2" 250 pound POS raping and murdering little Somer. My heart goes out to her family this morning. And obviously he had planned it, he didn't just randomly pick her off the street, he watched her and waited .....

This is on HLN...several bits throughout the day...Watched the news conference...He is formally charged now....They said he watched her as she walked by his house and called her over...they have evidence that he's guilty...

I'm glad the Sheriff's Department took their time with the investigation and did things right. Harrell will have to face the consequences of his actions and mommy can't save him. I hope the son of a bitch rots in hell.
