Casey Anthony saga hits the stage in "Tot Mom"
By Bob Hazen @ October 29, 2009 8:27 AM Permalink |

Central Floridians have spent the past year watching the Casey Anthony saga play out in their backyards, and soon theatre-goers will be able to watch it play out on stage.

The case is being made into a new drama called "Tot Mom," the nickname bestowed on Casey Anthony by Nancy Grace.

The play will be directed by Steven Soderbergh, and "explores issues associated with a real life murder case that is still unfolding in the United States," according to the website for the Sydney Theatre Company. "Tot Mom" is scheduled to begin December 18th and run through January 31st in Sydney, Australia.

Here's how the Sydney Theatre Company describes the play:

In June 2008, toddler Caylee Anthony was reported missing by her grandmother in Florida. What followed was a high profile investigation into her disappearance: an investigation that saw the child's own mother - Casey Anthony - implicated in what was later discovered to be a homicide.

While the strange facts of the case baffled police investigators they also sparked massive media and public interest. Why was Caylee's disappearance not reported to police for over a month? When was the child last seen? What was the strange smell in the boot of Casey Anthony's car? Who and where was the alleged babysitter?

Often controversial legal commentator and host of a popular television show, Nancy Grace, was outraged by the case. Her public crusade for justice for little Caylee transformed the case from a tragic story to a 24-hour news spectacle.

Using excerpts from transcripts of Nancy Grace's show, court documents and police reports, Steven Soderbergh has created Tot Mom - a compelling drama for our sensation-hungry times.

The cast is led by Essie Davis, who had roles in the Matrix movies and Australia.

Tickets are being sold for $70 for adults and $30 for people under 30.

Good morning, all. How in the heck can they write books and plays when they've not even had the trial? Seems like more and more, people are worshiping the almighty dollar above all else. I've read elsewhere that Geo and $indy will not profit from this, but I don't see how this is known yet. They will sure try! JMO

Welcome Elljay! From what I understand, the director took most of his information form the spectacle of Nancy Grace, thereby getting around the Ants.

Thanks for the welcome, babbette! Excerpts from the Nancy
Grace show? So how factual can this "play" be? She's been notoriously in The a's corner. I predict that it bombs!! crystal ball lol! I hope it does, anyway.

I read the Nancy Grace was trademarking the name "Tot Mom", but I do not know if it is true or not. If it is, I wonder if they got permission from NG to use the name....

Hi elljay! and ALL!!!! If NG says "No way Jose!" to them using Tot Mom they could use an alternative, such as "Snot Mom" or "Not Mom". Cindy might suggest "Hot Mom" or would George be the one to suggest that? Embarassed I know, I'm being bad...I'll stop bat

The Australian dollar is pretty close to the U.S. dollar in value. 70 Australian dollars equals $64.22 U.S. I find it weird that people under 30 can get tickets 40 dollars cheaper.

I can think of another name they could use that rhymes with Tot Mom, but I would rather be a gentleman and not say it.

Unbelievable. Now this is something I can honestly say I have NO interest in ever seeing. I wouldn't care if it was across the street from my house. I would NEVER go see this. Let alone PAY to see it. The biggest names in Hollywood wouldn't lure me in to watch either. Sick!

A play?

It's all about the money. Imagine all of the other books, TV shows and movies to come.

Theatre Producers Back Steven Soderbergh Play

--IANS-WENN

Theatre bosses behind STEVEN SODERBERGH's controversial new play have defended their decision to tackle the tragic story of murdered Florida toddler CAYLEE ANTHONY - following a flood of complaints about the production.

Caylee's remains were found in December 2008 and the little girl's mother, Casey, is charged with killing her. The mum has pleaded not guilty to murder.

Tot Mom, written by Soderbergh, is due to be performed by Australia's Sydney Theatre Company from December (09) but the delicate subject matter has enraged the public - with many taking up their grievances with theatre bosses, including artistic director Cate Blanchett.

But producers behind the play have hit back at allegations they are seeking to profit from the tragedy - insisting Soderbergh will be donating his fee to the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children.

A statement from the organisation reads, "Our interest in presenting the work has nothing to do with making money. This production is a one-off and will be only be seen in its Sydney season."

Cot Mom is more the appropriate title at this point. I hope they are sincere about where proceeds will be going since they are going ahead with production.

When I went to the link to read this, I was hoping to see WHY they were making it, if it wasn't about making money. It says they are defending their decision to make this play. Yet, does anyone know what they have said as their reasons to make it? I didn't see one.

Looks to me like the reason, IS, in fact, the almighty DOLLAR! UGH!
