ORLANDO, Fla. -- A member of Casey Anthony's defense team will make an appearance Thursday on NBC's "Today" show.

Defense attorney Andrea Lyon, who is taking the lead on the death penalty aspect of the trial, will discuss her new book, "Angel of Death Row."

Lyon is a leading critic of the death penalty and so far has led an unsuccessful effort to eliminate capital punishment as a possibility for Casey Anthony.

Casey Anthony, 23, is in the Orange County Jail charged with first-degree murder in the death of her daughter, Caylee. Caylee's remains were found in a wooded area off Suburban Drive in December 2008 near the Anthony family home.

Anthony maintains a nanny by the name of Zenaida Gonzalez kidnapped Caylee.

Andrea Lyon says her client didn’t kill Caylee

The Casey Anthony coverage recalls the Salem witch trials, Anthony attorney Andrea Lyon told NBC’s “Today” this morning.

“The intense media scrutiny here has made it, as far as I can see, virtually impossible to get a fair trial,” Lyon told Meredith Vieira.

Lyon said she was scared for Anthony, who is charged with first-degree murder in the death of daughter Caylee Anthony.

“The fact that she’s been pilloried in the press … I would liken this, Meredith, to the Salem witch trials,” Lyon said. The attorney went on to describe the mass hysteria that inflamed Salem.

Lyon acknowledged that the death penalty puts a lot of pressure on a defendant even when they haven’t committed a murder. “She didn’t kill her kid,” Lyon said of Anthony.

There was a long pause.

“You’re absolutely sure without a doubt?” Vieira asked.

“I’m sure,” Lyon responded.

“Based on?” Vieira said.

Lyon pointed to the evidence. “There’s not even any evidence that this was a homicide, let alone any evidence tying her to it,” the attorney said.

Lyon said she hopes the trial will be moved to a larger venue with a more diverse jury pool. The murder trial is likely to start this summer.

Lyon visited “Today” to promote her new book, “Angel of Death Row.” But the show spent more time on the Casey Anthony case. Lyon said there was a lot of anger directed at Anthony and her attorneys.

Anthony could be put to death if convicted. Lyon said the “barbaric” death penalty should be given to no one.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Casey Anthony’s high-powered death penalty attorney, Andrea Lyon, showed the public a different side when she spoke out on national TV Thursday.

"I am scared. I'm scared for my client,” Lyon said on The Today Show.

Lyon was asked to join Casey's defense team in May, because Jose Baez isn't a death-qualified lawyer.
Lyon has tried more than 130 homicide cases, defended more than 30 potential capital cases and taken 19 people through the penalty phase and, so far, she's won them all. However, Thursday, Lyon admitted she's not optimistic about her client’s chances.

"There’s always a presumption of guilt and the intense media scrutiny here, as far as I can see, has made it virtually impossible to get a fair trial and we’re rolling an even bigger stone up a bigger hill than you normally are," Lyon said.

Lyon also said she doesn't believe that Casey killed Caylee Anthony, but she wouldn't say if she has evidence that would prove otherwise.

Andrea made her point: If a defendant is charged and the media gets wind of it they can no longer get a fair trial. I say "BS!" Our constitution is stronger than Nancy Grace or Fox News! Give us some credit! kh

Casey can get a fair trial. OJ's case had a lot of media coverage and he, wrongly in my opinion, was found not guilty.

The defense strategy seems to be: Let's call the whole thing off!

Lyon claims the death penalty is "barbaric". So Casey killing "her kid" was a humane act? Casey murdering Caylee was barbaric - an act that screams out for the death sentence. Lyon is one cold-blooded, cold-hearted conniver- she is a criminal's last hope.

IMO, the only thing AL truly cares about in this case is keeping KC from getting the DP.... if KC is given LWOP, AL will preserve her "perfect" record....... THAT'S what she cares about.... not the fact that murdering Princess Poopy Pants (as Valhall calls her) coldly stole the life of precious angel Caylee......

Also IMO, there is no way the defense team members actually believe KC didn't kill Caylee.... even they aren't THAT stupid.

even the most expensive sheets and softest mattresses is the world would not help if you were defending a guilty baby killer.

They can try to convince themselves KC didn't really kill her daughter, but they are not completely stupid people... OK, well, maybe one of them is.... but I will never believe all those people on the defense believe KC to be innocent. They are the DEFENSE. They just don't care that KC killed Caylee..... otherwise, what would be AL's excuse for all the other 19 murderers she has kept off death row? Did she believe ALL of them to be innocent also???? My guess is NO.

I think it's ironic that AL would say on national television that "Casey didn't kill her kid".....that's the same verbage in the recent inmate's letter. He uses those words 3 times on the last page alone. I feel AL showed total disrespect by referring to Caylee in that manner, how cold and heartless. The entire lot of them are whoreible, holding out their buckets to be filled with blood money made off the murder of a child. They all know KC is guilty. It just gets more disgusting as each day passes.

I think I may know which one you are refering to Snaz. I haven't watched this little gem of an interview but I already know it's gonna make me mad.....Off to the trenches!
