But the monster heard us loud and clear, eye to eye, only feet away from us. It was our only opportunity to just turn and stare him in the face and speak our mind, so we took that opportunity to do so. He didn't have any choice but to stand there and listen to us.

impact statements are used during the penalty phase of a trial to give the family the opportunity to address the court about their loss, and their feelings, they are used to give the judge a more "personal" look into the victim... to help with sentencing ..

in court, no one is allowed to address the other party, the prosecution and defense make their arguments only to the judge, so it doesnt turn into a school yard argument... they are not permitted to address each other.... victim impact statement are the same... they are to be written to the judge, read aloud, but NEVER addressed directly at a defendant--not saying some judges wont let it slip by, due to the high emotional level usually contained.. but generally, speaking directly to a defendant is not permitted.

Thanks, Randi! That makes sense..... and I guess the judge in the Peterson case, given the emotional level was SO high, just let it slide when Laci's mom told him divorce was always an option as she glared him in the eye.....

Too bad the A's won't take a hard look at the way Sharon Rocha and her family handled their situation (or Mark Klaas, or Mark Lunsford or John Walsh or any of the other families who have endured a tragic loss) vs. the way they have behaved.... and make changes accordingly. It's just so hard to understand, the A's knowing how much the public supported these families, and seeing how different they, themselves, have behaved, and yet the A's refuse to change their behavior...... but then again, the A's are a very dysfunctional family and the other families are not. IMO

AJ thank you for your kind words. Unfortunately, we are amoung the many families that have experienced this type of crime. It's just another reason that I cannot understand how the Anthony's can support the person that murdered Caylee, daughter or not.

George tells WOFL people can be so cruel; WFTV analyst blasts Andrea Lyon

posted by halboedeker on January, 7 2010 5:32 PM

Andrea Lyon’s appearance on “Today” was only the start of Casey Anthony coverage today.

In an exclusive interview on WOFL-Channel 35, George Anthony says he has been living through hell since granddaughter Caylee’s disappearance.

He read an article he has written, titled “Living Under a Microscope.” He told WOFL’s Holly Bristow that the article was about what he had been through in the last year and a half. His daughter, Casey, has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of Caylee.

“Suddenly you are thrown into a life that you have no control over,” George Anthony read. “Your everyday walking, talking is analyzed, dissected and just plain torn apart.”

He said 9 out of 10 people are nice to him and wife Cindy Anthony. But the 10th can be cruel and noted that people pointed at him and snapped his picture as he traveled to the WOFL interview.

“I’ve asked many people: ‘Want to change places with me, walk in my shoes if only for a minute, a day?’ But they cannot,” he said. “People say, ‘I know what you are going through.’ The only person that knows are two of the people who have been through this.”

In a later portion of the WOFL interview, George Anthony said he still had suicidal thoughts after trying to take his life a year ago. “Do I hurt every day? Do I feel like I could jump out a window? Yeah,” he said. “But then again, I know I’ve got to deal with it, I’ve got to be here to see this through.”

He said he was proud of his new tattoo celebrating his granddaughter, “because Caylee is forever with me.”

Casey Anthony’s murder trial is likely to start this summer. Her check-fraud trial will be Jan. 25.

On WFTV-Channel 9, legal analyst Bill Sheaffer wasn’t impressed by Anthony defense attorney Lyon’s performance on “Today” this morning. Lyon complained that Anthony had been “pilloried” in the press and compared the coverage to the Salem witch trials.

“Quit whining and get to the defense of this case,” Sheaffer told WFTV’s Kathi Belich. “The facts are what the facts are. If that is tried before a jury in Orlando, Tampa, New York City or Timbuktu, the jurors are going to form their opinion based upon their view of the evidence.”

Lyon told NBC’s Meredith Vieira that the reason Casey is innocent won’t be revealed until the trial. Belich called Lyon’s comment the “defense’s flimsy mantra.”

And Belich added: “Sheaffer said if they had something really convincing that could spring Casey from jail, they would bring it now.”

WFTV also reported that Jesse Grund, Casey’s former fiance, is fighting the defense team’s motion to get more of his cell-phone records.

I found this to be quite humorous...... it's from the EggTreeNews Blog.

Local Fool Calls Press Conference to Complain About Media Attention

Jan. 8, 2010

-Orlando, FL

In a move of mind-numbing ignorance, Orlando fool George Anthony called a press conference today to formally complain about all the media attention he’s been getting. In fact, Anthony’s disgust with the press inspired him to take pen to paper and compose a literary masterpiece called “Life Under a Microscope,” a short essay he opted to read in-person, rather than through his lawyer/paid mouthpiece, for the annoying, intrusive cameras this morning.

In the essay, Anthony describes the inconvenience of voluntarily walking under a microscope and making totally conflicting statements about his grandaughter’s murder, only to have all his words and actions “unfairly dissected” by an overzealous media, and bored evil bloggers looking for their 15 minutes of “fame” under totally anonymous pseudonymns.

Bafflingly, George went on to claim that on average, a whopping 9 out of 10 people made positive, heartwarming comments about him, leaving many reporters scratching their heads as to why he would feel compelled to call a press conference to complain about negative publicity. But the one vicious comment, he went on to say, would be so hurtful it outweighed ALL the others, prompting his call for national attention to the issue today.

7th graders everywhere nodded their heads in agreement.

He also wished to clarify that the controversial diamond stud spotted in his ear on a recent luxury Bahamian cruise was inspired by his daughter (and accused murderess) Casey, who complimented him once on his “attractive earlobes.” Ahh, well….that changes EVERYTHING.

At the conclusion of his impassioned speech, George announced that published, autographed copies of his essay were available free with purchase of Andrea Lyons new book, “Angel of Death Row,” out in the lobby. Also available (for the right price): Cindy Anthony’s “Guide to Public Relations,” Jose Baez’s “Mouthbreathing for Dummies,” and replicas of Casey’s “Mother of the Year” plaque.
