Casey Anthony injured in courthouse fall

Updated: Tuesday, 01 Jun 2010, 7:06 PM EDT

ORLANDO, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - A Florida mother charged with murdering her 2-year-old daughter missed a pretrial court hearing Tuesday after she suffered some minor injuries in a fall at an Orlando courthouse. Casey Anthony, 24, fell before entering the courtroom when her hand and leg restraints became entangled. She fell forward, and officers escorting her were unable to stop her fall, officials said.

Anthony has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and has said a baby sitter kidnapped her daughter, Caylee. Her trial is set to start next May.

During the hearing, which was held without Anthony present, her attorneys asked a new judge on the case to reconsider a previous judge's ruling that keeps the death penalty as a possible sentence if she is convicted.

Chief Judge Belvin Perry denied their request for more details supporting prosecutors' decision to seek the death penalty. Prosecutors have listed five aggravating reasons for why they are seeking the death penalty: the especially cruel nature of the crime, the victim's age and Anthony's relationship to the victim as her mother among them.

Perry ruled prosecutors have satisfied their obligations. Anthony's attorneys also tried to prevent the media from seeing records of who is visiting Anthony in jail, reasoning the records might reveal high-profile witnesses the defense does not want publicized. Perry planned to rule on the motion by next week.

FOX 35 put in a public records request to see who has been visiting Casey Anthony in behind bars. In the month of May, the 24 year old only had five visitors. Jose Baez visited once. Michelle Medina, who is an attorney at the Baez Law Firm, visited twice. Andrea Lyon and her private investigators Mortimer Smith also visited Casey Anthony last month.

Other visitors have included Jeanene Barrett, she's a mitigation specialist. She will working on saving Casey from the death penalty if Casey is found guilty of murdering her daughter. Casey's parents minister also visited once. That was in December of 2008, about a week after 2 year old Caylee's remains were found.

Anthony's murder trial is set to begin on May 9, 2011. All depositions of witnesses are to be completed by October 31, 2010. She remains jailed on a charge of first-degree murder in the death of her daughter Caylee who was last seen in June of 2008, but she was not reported missing until a month later. Her remains were found in woods near the family's home on December 11, 2008. Investigators say the toddler's body was found with duct tape over her mouth.

From the 3:12 p.m. update by Holly Bristow at the same link:

Casey Anthony suffered a fall in the courthouse shortly before a hearing was to begin at 2 p.m. The hearing is proceeding without Anthony "Escorting officers were unable to catch her before she fell," said jail spokesman Allen Moore. "Based on all information available, this was purely an accident."

Anthony has received treatment from medical personnel in an undisclosed location. Orange County Corrections Internal Affairs will be conducting an inquiry, which is standard procedure according to Moore. "I am told her legal team is aware of the incident," Moore added.

Before the hearing began, Anthony's attorneys Jose Baez and Cheney Mason met behind closed doors. Then a prosecutor and the court reporter were asked to join them. Then everyone came out and Baez pulled Casey's mother, Cindy, and her attorney out into the hallway for a quick discussion. It was shortly after their meeting that Judge Perry allowed Cheney Mason to waive her presence as soon as court was in session.

I didn't think Perry would over-rule any of Strickland's rulings. That would be putting down one of his judges, and I think this guy is much smarter than any one of the defense team.

He knows this defendant's story, he knows the facts of the case and he knows she is guilty.

The defense made this choice, and now they have to live with it. Too Bad.

I couldn't believe the gall of the defense wanting to overturn how many? of Judge Strickland's rulings. They forgot to ask to overturn the sealing of Casey's nervous breakdown video when the news broke that a child's remains were found around the corner from her house.

lol! Cindy does look like a blowfish....it's probably the result of her wallering that gum around in her mouth trying to hide that she was disobeying Judge P's rule about not chewing gum in his courtroom. Did you all see her with her doing that with her gum?

Julie, to me, Cindy looks very scary.... and not quite all there..... when I first saw the picture, I thought someone doctored it.... until I realized it was from the myfoxorlando website.

If you want to see what was going on when this picture was taken, this is the part of the hearing ( at about 9:00 into the video) in which it occurs. She is sure doing some funky things with her mouth and face..... and for a few seconds there, she looks very glazed over. That seems to be the moment the took the picture!

No, Lottie, I missed it, unless it is the time I posted above. I was mostly listening to the hearing rather than watching closely. If that's not it, any chance you could find the time when she was chewing that gum. I've read quite a bit about how she was chewing away.......

Thanks!

Snaz, I only saw the beginning of the hearing and every time they panned to Cindy she was making that face while wallering her gum around in her mouth with an occasional bite to the wad she couldn't leave outside the courtroom. She was trying to be so discreet! Now, per my sense of humor, THAT was funny! And if she looks worried it was probably only for fear she'd get caught with her gum.

Casey’s Jail Visitors Not A Secret For Long
Monday, June 07, 2010 9:15:08 PM

ORLANDO -- Casey Anthony will not be able to hide the names of people who come to visit her in jail.

That was one of three rulings handed down Monday by Judge Belvin Perry in her murder case.

Anthony's attorneys had asked for jail visitation logs to be kept secret because they didn't want prosecutors to know which experts were visiting their client.

The judge also denied a defense request concerning the death penalty.

He also denied a motion for the state to turn over forensic evidence that prosecutors claim they don't have.

Judge Perry has ruled that the list of her visitors at the Orange County jail won't be kept secret. Perry filed his ruling Monday.

The judge also denied two other motions, one to compel forensic discovery and the other to strike state's notice of aggravating circumstances.

Judge denies defense request to seal names of jail visitors

posted by halboedeker on June, 8 2010 8:55 AM

Judge Belvin Perry has ruled that the list of Casey Anthony’s jail visitors won’t be kept secret, Central Florida News 13 reports.

On Monday, Perry “denied a defense request to seal the names of people who visit Anthony at the Orange County Jail,” anchor Lisa Bell reported this morning. “Her lawyers do not want prosecutors to know which experts are visiting their client.”

Anthony is charged with first-degree murder in the death of her daughter, 2-year-old Caylee.

Overall, Monday wasn’t a good for the defense.

Bell added, “The judge also shot down other motions from the defense regarding the death penalty and forensic evidence.”

Judge denies 3 motions from Casey Anthony

By Alan Schmadtke, Orlando Sentinel
11:18 a.m. EDT, June 8, 2010

Casey Anthony lost three arguments before Orange Osceola Chief Judge Belvin Perry, who denied three recent motions by her defense team.

In three orders signed on Monday, Perry:

•Ruled that Anthony's wish to keep confidential her visitors at the Orange County Jail "in a high profile case does not qualify as a lawful exemption." Further, there is no exemption in state law that allows the court the seal such public records.

•Declined to strike prosecutors' filing of its notice of aggravating circumstances — reasons why it will seek the death penalty. Anthony's attorneys had argued that the state "merely filed a list of factors on which it may rely, failed to serve the defense with notice, and failed to provide any indication of the evidence it would use to prove the existence of those factors.

•And ruled that prosecutors do not have to provide some forensic evidence from Oak Ridge Laboratories. However, Perry said the defense could re-file a similar motion as long as it has a narrower focus.

Casey Anthony is being held in the jail under a first-degree murder charge in the death of her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee Marie Anthony.

The state is seeking the death penalty, and her trial is set for May 2011.
