Ump Robs Tigers Of Perfect Game

Post by Justice4all on Thu Jun 03, 2010 4:45 am

Armando Galarraga of the Detroit Tigers threw a perfect game last night up until there were two outs in the ninth inning. Umpire Jim Joyce then ruled Jason Donal of the Indians safe when he clearly didn't beat the throw. I think Major League Baseball should give Galarraga the perfect game.

The Tigers should have some good calls coming there way. They were also robbed of the playoffs in the last game of the season with the Twins last year when an ump blew a call.

J4a, this would have been the 22nd perfect game in the history of MLB. Who remembers any of the other pitchers in the 21 games. Not many people. However, everyone will remember this one, since the pitcher was such a nice guy about it. The ump was very sorry and actually cried when he watched the replay.

The next day, this same pitcher handed their team's lineup to this same ump, with a big smile. The ump cried again, and placed his hand on the pitcher's shoulder.

This was very moving.

I was glad to see Galarraga handle it with class. The manager did his job when it happened and argued the call, but after that the whole team handled it with class. It was clear that the ump was very sorry when he realized his mistake. There's no reason to keep beating up on the guy. It would be a different story if he had made the wrong call on purpose which he clearly didn't.

Unfortunately, I heard on a local sports radio show that he was receiving death threats. They even said a guy with the same name as the ump who lives in the Toledo, OH area was receiving death threats and people were egging his house. It's just a game and I hope the people taking such actions face charges.

It was nice how they had Galarraga hand him the lineup card the next day. I think most of the players on the Tigers felt bad for the ump and the way they handled the whole thing diffused a potentially volatile situation with the fans. The ump received a few boos when he came out, but overall the fans were classy and the game was played without incident.
