ORLANDO, Fla. -- There is a shift of the blame in the case against Casey Anthony. Documents released only to WFTV Monday show, for the first time, Casey's lawyers are investigating her father. WFTV legal analyst Bill Sheaffer said the defense may be trying to discredit him, or possibly blame George Anthony.

The documents WFTV obtained show how the defense is spending taxpayer money. Some of the ways the lawyers are spending that limited money is investigating George Anthony.

The defense has spent about $4,000 of taxpayers' money so far on Casey's defense, and most of it on its private investigator.

Records obtained by WFTV show the defense is investigating George Anthony's suicide attempt. They did it to her ex-fiance, Jesse Grund, who was willing to raise another man's child as his own. The defense did it to meter reader Roy Kronk, who found Caylee Anthony’s remains near the Anthonys’ home on Hopespring Drive.

Now, the defense team could be doing it to Casey Anthony’s father, trying to discredit George. Records show her defense team's private eye has investigated George's suicide attempt the month after Caylee was found.

“The defense will have to discredit George, because George has some information that is damning to the defense,” Sheaffer said (full interview) .

Sheaffer says George's testimony helped prosecutors get a first-degree murder indictment against Casey even before her daughter's body was found. George said her car trunk smelled like a dead body and that, days after Caylee disappeared, Casey came home unexpectedly and prevented George from going into the trunk of her car.

At taxpayers' expense, the defense team spent hours at the Hawaii Motel in Daytona where George tried to take his own life. They also were at the Daytona Beach Police Department getting records.

“They would want to show he was mentally unstable,” Sheaffer said.

Sheaffer says the defense might go even farther to try to make some jurors wonder whether George is the murderer; Casey could have laid the groundwork by accusing her father of sexually abusing her.

“He was the last person to see Caylee, along with Casey. The duct tape came from his house. The heart stickers came from his house,” Sheaffer said.

If the defense can't convince a jury that George or someone else covered Caylee's face with duct tape and stuck a heart sticker over her mouth, they might try to use George's suicide attempt to portray Casey's family as dysfunctional to spare her from a possible death sentence.

Gee, I bet George is really glad now that he showed up for the last hearing. Every time he shows up to show some support for Casey, he gets stabbed in the back by her & her defense team. If I were him, I would either not go to another one, or sit on the other side of the courtroom.

This is not a surprise to most people, IMO...... certainly not to me. I think we have all seen how the defense will throw anyone, and everyone, under the bus to defend their baby killer client.

I'm guessing Cindy doesn't even care if they try to throw suspicion onto GA..... this may help her get him out of her life.... without having to give him half the house, and any future proceeds they may receive from the death of Caylee.

The only person Cindy will care about the defense throwing under the bus is CINDY.

But I'm guessing GEORGE cares quite a bit right about now. I wonder, with these invoices coming to light, how much of a shock the fact that HE is being investigated by the defense is for George.

Oh, and one more thing....... I wonder how George feels about his 'suicide by beer and pizza attempt' now..... bet he's wishing he hadn't tried that little stunt.... nor written the "suicide letter' that we have not yet been made privy to.

I'm not surprised they are checking George out. I fully expect Cindy will be checked out next.

When all else fails, the defense is going to turn to the accident theory and say Casey JUST told them the truth! Then Casey's going to claim George and/or Cindy made her make up the nanny story.

Is this really a shock to you??? I was just waiting for the next gotcha...I hope GA lets them have it when he is questioned about his actions...Will he stand up to them, or will he crawl into his shell...Bet we won't hear him say that Caylee is still alive...

That whole Debbie Polisano thing was just bizarre. Well, the whole day was really, but I mean she was hours LATE...... then, Cheney Mason didn't seem to not know what she was going to say AND she sure didn't say what he wanted/expected her to say. Are they gonna frame George? I don't know. I don't think 'frame' is the right word though. I think he is willing going along with the defense in what ever direction they tell him to. kh

Is George playing the Myrtar? Perhaps thinking he'll go down for his "beautiful" daughters' dirty deed and "save" her? Of course pigs could fly and he'll stand up for himself and "tell all". We shall see....

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The defense team representing Casey Anthony, who is accused of murder in the death of her daughter, Caylee, could use her father's threats of suicide to help save her life -- if she's found guilty.

Anthony, 24, is jailed on first-degree murder charges in the death of Caylee, who was 2 years old when she was reported missing in July 2008. Her remains were found in Orange County in December 2008.

Anthony's father, George Anthony, was found at a Daytona Beach motel in January 2009 after threatening to commit suicide.

Casey Anthony's lead attorney, Jose Baez, told Local 6 News that his team is investigating the incident and could use what's discovered in the death penalty phase of Casey Anthony's murder trial, if she's found guilty. Baez said George Anthony's suicide attempt may convince a jury to spare his client's life because it shows how Caylee's death has affected the family. Oh brother!

Baez said he plans to prove Casey Anthony's innocence, but added that he must prepare for the worst-case scenario. Ya think, jose?

Casey Anthony has pleaded not guilty. Her murder trial is scheduled to begin in May 2011.

I cant help but think this has always been the plan for awhile now. Maybe thats why this comes after the letters of sexual abuse by George. Remember the Susan Smith trial when her step-father got on the stand and told the jury that he sexually abused Susan when she was a child? I wonder how far GA would go to see Casey walk or get life.

On the other hand. Baez is such an idiot. First Jesse, then Kronk and now George. The defense is seriously looking like theyre desperate (and they are desperate). The jury,I would think, would be able to see right thru him. I dont think that anyone can get her off.

Baez Says Team Must 'Investigate Everything'

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Casey Anthony's defense attorney, Jose Baez, acknowledged that his team is investigating his client's father, George Anthony.

George was the only member of the Anthony family to testify before the grand jury that indicted Casey for murder. In an interview with the FBI, George claimed that Casey stole from her parents and from Caylee.

In last week's hearing, Cindy Anthony testified that in her first 911 calls, she was repeating George's opinion that Casey's car smelled like it had a dead body inside.

Now, Casey's defense is investigating George. Sources tell WESH 2 that the defense has focused on his 2009 suicide attempt.

Baez told WESH 2, "We're obligated to investigate everything."

"The loss of Caylee and the pain it has caused the family is very relevant to mitigation," Baez said.

Once a jury has found someone guilty of first-degree murder, mitigation is testimony offered by the defenses to convince the jury to vote for life instead of death. George Anthony's attorney, Brad Conway, said mitigation evidence would involve events that lead up to Caylee's death.

"They're going to have to prove the relevancy of a suicide attempt after the fact," Conway said.

Conway said the defense's investigation comes as no surprise to him.

"I expected they would investigate George just like any other witness," Conway said. "We've cooperated with the defense and the state attorney's office transparently."

Why is Casey Anthony’s defense team investigating George Anthony’s suicide attempt?

WESH-Ch. 2 sought explanations from Casey Anthony’s defense team and George Anthony’s attorney.

Jose Baez told WESH’s Bob Kealing that Casey’s defense team is “obligated to investigate everything.” But Kealing said when he asked if the defense is investigating Cindy and Lee Anthony, Baez didn’t answer.

Casey Anthony is charged with first-degree murder in the death of her daughter, Caylee.

Baez told WESH, “The loss of Caylee and the pain it has caused this family is very relevant to mitigation.”

Defense lawyers present mitigation evidence after a defendant is found guilty of first-degree murder to persuade a jury to vote for life instead of death.

Mitigation would involve evidence leading up to Caylee’s death, Brad Conway, George Anthony’s attorney, told WESH. Conway questioned why George’s suicide attempt, which came after Caylee’s death, would be relevant.

Conway didn’t sound surprised by the news about the defense team investigating George. “I expected they would investigate George just like any other witness,” Conway told WESH.

But Jeff Dowdy, an attorney with death penalty experience, told WESH that he questioned the defense’s contention that George Anthony was being investigated just for the mitigation phase. “That just doesn’t make any sense,” Dowdy said.

Instead, Dowdy speculated that the defense will treat George Anthony as a hostile witness because his testimony is valuable to the prosecution.

In other Anthony news, Judge Belvin Perry has asked for a copy of the phone call between Baez and prison inmate Robin Lunceford, WESH and WFTV-Ch. 9 reported. Baez says the conversation was illegally recorded and has asked that the call be sealed. The state had planned to release the call as part of discovery. Perry is seeking the state’s response before deciding whether to release the call.

And....looks like KC is gonna stick with her sexual abuse story according to another site, and her visitors list...a psychologist specializing in child abuse has visited her....also another (new) attorney visited her on 7/2/2010...The attorney is DP qualified...I wondered when someone else was gonna jump on the bandwagon....we'll see if he bites....A lot younger than Chinny Chin Chin and definitely more knowledgable than Bozo...
