Casey Anthony jury in for tough schedule

ORLANDO -- When the Case Against Casey goes to trial, jurors will need to get comfy.

Judge Belvin Perry, the state and the defense will travel to another part of Florida and try to find enough people to fill the seats for six days a week, for quite possibly more than a month.

It's an ambitious goal that's never been done before in Florida.

"I think it's going to be significantly difficult to get people that are capable of doing that or that anybody would want to do that," said Cheney Mason, one of Anthony’s attorneys.

Could AG-Elect's Link To Anthony Case Impact Jury?
Newly Elected Attorney General Used To Provide Case Analysis

UPDATED: 5:59 pm EDT November 4, 2010

Pam Bondi was well known on the network news circuit for weighing in on the case.

At the time, Bondi was a Tampa prosecutor. She offered analysis on the Anthony case on cable and network television shows.

WATCH: Bondi Weighs In On Anthony Case

Judge Belvin Perry has already ruled that jurors in Anthony's murder trial will be brought in from elsewhere in Florida.

Given Bondi's notoriety in Tampa prior to her election, defense attorney Richard Hornsby said Anthony's defense team has room to argue that jurors should not be chosen from that area. Hornsby is not connected to the Anthony case.

"She's excluded that as a venue in my opinion to go to find jurors," Hornsby said. "It gives the defense more ammunition to argue for more specific venues to pick the jury from."

Where In Florida Is Casey Coverage Heaviest?

Attorney Says Regardless Of Location, Lawyers Must Ask Tough Questions

UPDATED: 6:46 pm EST February 14, 2011

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Judge Belvin Perry admitted at a recent hearing in the case against Casey Anthony that he is tracking media coverage of the case across the state in order to see where he has a better chance of picking a jury for the trial.

Anthony's defense wants a jury from another city, but a veteran attorney said he's confident one could be chosen no matter where in Florida the judge chooses.

Perry fears that if he makes the location of jury selection known too soon, the media will saturate the area with coverage, making it harder to pick an impartial jury.

Jury Selection In The Anthony Case

Post by Debw6051 on Fri Feb 25, 2011 10:08 pm

No way will this trial be over in a month. It's been almost 3 years and they're still deposing people. I'm betting it lasts at least 2-3 months, but I think the jury takes less time for a guilty verdict than O.J.s did for not guilty.

Hi Debw6051! I don't think it will take the jury much time at all to decide Casey is guilty. The first 24 hours after Caylee was reported missing tells it all, never mind the cell phone pings or even the forensics. Casey, George, Cindy and Lee painted a pretty clear picture........IMO.

to RC, Debw6051! I think you're right, somehow the trial will get dragged out, thanks to the defense team. Remember, they are easily confused.

State Objects To Anthony Jury Watching Lifetime

Casey Anthony Charged With Murder In Death Of Daughter

UPDATED: 2:54 pm EDT April 4, 2011

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The judge in the Casey Anthony case on Monday issued a proposed list of TV channels that the sequestered jury would be able to watch during the upcoming murder trial.

Needless to say, HLN is not on the list of approved channels. I'm kind of surpised that TNT and USA are with all the crime dramas they show. There was a Law and Order: SVU episode based on the Anthony case a couple years ago.

Casey Anthony trial: Perry says defense can argue again to change jury-pool location

Judge Belvin Perry said he would entertain arguments to pick a jury

By Anthony Colarossi, Orlando Sentinel
April 9, 2011

The judge in the Casey Anthony case opened the door today for defense attorneys to argue to change the jury-pool location for the young woman's murder trial — only under limited circumstances.

Under the current plan, Orange-Osceola Chief Judge Belvin Perry said a jury would be selected outside of Orlando beginning May 9 and jurors would be brought here and sequestered for a trial at the Orange County Courthouse beginning May 17 — one day later than originally planned.

But today, Perry said he would entertain arguments for changing the jury-pool location only if they can't find a jury outside of Orlando the week of May 9.

If that happens, then jury selection would begin in Orlando the following week. However, Perry said he would consider hearing arguments to find a second location outside of Orlando to pick a jury if one of the parties asked for it.

Orlando Jury Possible In Casey Murder Trial
Judge Proposes Backup Plans For Jury Selection

UPDATED: 2:29 pm EDT April 8, 2011

ORLANDO, Fla. -- An Orange County jury isn’t out of the question in the case against Casey Anthony, Judge Belvin Perry announced at a status hearing Friday.

Defense lawyers want the case to use jurors from another city in Florida due to the amount of publicity the case has received.

Why Casey Anthony team may have tough time finding unbiased jury

By Adam Longo, Reporter
Last Updated: Monday, April 11, 2011 1:02 PM

ORLANDO --

Twelve jurors will decide two things at Casey Anthony's trial:

Guilty or not guilty?
Life or death?

But according to some experts, Casey's lawyers may have a tough time finding an impartial jury.

"The problem is studies have shown that death-qualified juries are more likely to convict in the guilt phase, where the jury determines innocence or guilt," said David Fussell, an Orlando defense attorney who has experience choosing death-qualified juries.

The panel on HLN last night said it is very unlikely that a jury will be chosen in 4-5 days, and that it will almost be an automatic appeal if they end up selecting the jury in Orange County. Judge Alex said he presided over a high profile case in Miami and it took 30 days to find a jury. Richard Hornsby said it will probably take way longer than 4-5 days.
