Update: Helicopters, Billboards Drawn Into Search For Hailey Dunn

COLORADO CITY, Texas -- Search helicopters and billboards are now being used by law enforcement officials and family in the search for missing Colorado City teenager Hailey Dunn.

Thursday also marked the first day back at school since the Christmas holidays for Hailey's eighth-grade classmates at Colorado Middle School. With orange ribbons tied around nearly every tree on campus, the school day took place without 13-year-old Hailey.

Counselors were on hand at the school Thursday to help students deal with the absence and disturbing news concerning Hailey.

Search authorities also said the reward for returning Hailey officially stood at $15,000. Officials said they had erroneously reported the reward as being $25,000, apparently because some of the money was pledged but yet not donated. Nevertheless, new billboards put up Thursday announced the reward as $25,000.

Cali, those similarities are eerie.

I was listening, not watching, the news last and when Hailey's mom stated they both failed the polygraphs, it was also stated her and the boyfriend were told the other had failed before they each took their test.

Anytime I hear "We met on Myspace", I get a bad sinking feeling.

COLORADO CITY, Texas -- The mother of the missing Colorado City girl answered questions Thursday night on The Nancy Grace Show about several issues investigators haven't released to the media.

Billie Jean Dunn said both she and her live in boyfriend, Shawn Adkins, failed a polygraph test and that she has now lost faith in the test.

She also said that she asked Adkins to leave her home because she "didn't know what to think anymore." According to Billie Dunn, the boyfriend is now staying with his grandmother.

Meanwhile, the search for Hailey goes on. Search helicopters and billboards are now being used by law enforcement officials and family in the search for missing Colorado City teenager Hailey Dunn.

Hadn't seen mom's bf speak before last night's episode of Nancy Grace. There were just a couple of very brief clips of him saying "I could never do anything to that little girl" (I automatically flashed back to Misty Croslin talking about Haleigh Cummings). He also said he just wanted her home. He seemed to be almost smiling and completely unaffected. Maybe that's how he always is, but I'm glad LE is looking hard at him. Last person to see Hailey, got in a fight and got fired the same day, seemingly glib attitude... I don't care about his poly results, but the other factors bother me. So glad the Texas Rangers are involved and they are searching and seem to be investigating those close to Hailey, and the possibility of an unknown person's involvement simultaneously. Hailey's mom seems very genuine to me and confused and heartbroken. Hope she didn't unintentionally put her girl in harm's way - nightmare...

Update: Search Parties Will Go House-To-House In Colorado City

UPDATED: 11:42 am CST January 7, 2011

COLORADO CITY, Texas -- Search parties will be going house-to-house knocking on doors across the northern side of Colorado City Friday afternoon.

The searchers will be canvassing the entire area surrounding Hailey Dunn's northside home, starting at the city limits and sweeping through neighborhoods, asking questions of residents and searching for any information about missing teenager Hailey Dunn.

Residents in Colorado City are being asked to join the search. Volunteers are being asked to gather at the Mitchell County Courthouse in Colorado City at 2 p.m. to create search parties to conduct the search across the northern portions of the city.

The volunteers will join the efforts of 12 law enforcement and missing child agencies, including the FBI, that have combined efforts to work on the case of the missing Colorado Middle School student.

Hailey's mom first said that her bf came home from work at 3 p.m. and that was the the last time Hailey was seen, Nancy Grace 1/3. Then the next day on Nancy Grace she stated that she had since learned that he hadn't been at work that day; he'd had a fight with someone he didn't get along with and either quit or got fired and then went to his mom's for the day. He returned to their home around 3 p.m. and that was the last Hailey was seen. I'm looking for the transcripts now and will post shortly.

GRACE: Last night, you told me he was on his way home from work, but now I`m learning he was on his way home from his mother`s home?

BILLIE DUNN: Yes. He had been at his mother`s house all day Monday. Police have confirmed that he got home about 3:00 o`clock, and Hailey left shortly after.

GRACE: OK. Where does he work?

BILLIE DUNN: He`s not working.

GRACE: OK. Last night, didn`t you tell me he was on his way home from work, or did I just get that mistaken?

BILLIE DUNN: No, I said that. He went in Monday morning, but there was an argument. He was fired or there was just a big blow-up there. He walked out. He left his job by 6:30 in the morning and went to Big Spring (ph) to his mom`s house.

GRACE: OK. What was the blow-up about?

BILLIE DUNN: I don`t even know. I just know he didn`t get along with one or two of the co-workers.

GRACE: OK. I want to go through his story again. But first let me go back to Michael Board, WOAI Newsradio. Michael, tell me what your understanding of the chronology is.

BOARD: This was about 3:00 o`clock on Monday, December 27th, that the boyfriend, from what we know, came home. That`s where he met with Hailey, at his home. Hailey at that time told the mother`s boyfriend that she was going from her mom`s house to her dad`s house, then her dad`s house to a friend`s house.

COLORADO CITY, Texas -- The reporting of rumor, innuendo and misrepresentation seems to be a part – sadly – of the unfolding story surrounding missing teenager Hailey Dunn.
Despite statements to the contrary by people involved, Sparky Dean, senior trooper of the Texas Department of Public Safety, told KTXS on Friday that no one has been told whether they have passed or failed a polygraph test.
This comes despite the statement made on national television by Billie Dunn, Hailey's mother, that she and her former live-in boyfriend Shawn Adkins had both failed polygraph tests. She made this statement on live television Thursday night on HLN's "Nancy Grace."
Told of Dean's statement that no results of passing or failure were pronounced, Billie Dunn twice reasserted her position: She was told there was "deception indicated."
The misunderstanding of what did and did not occur stands as an example of the enormous challenges of news reporting in the middle of an ongoing investigation, during which assumptions and misunderstandings exist – and are sometimes reported to the public.
Furthermore, KTXS has learned over the past several days, that other family members have made various conflicting and unconfirmed claims – declaring, at different times, that at least four different people have failed the polygraph tests.
Yet another member of the extended family added an assertion Friday morning to KTXS News that Adkins "had been cleared" of any wrong-doing.
Such assertions, assumptions and misunderstandings seem to occur in a fluid, ongoing story that is not yet complete.
Another assertion made on the "Nancy Grace" show Thursday night stated that the Billie Dunn's home was searched on Wednesday for the first time. Officials on Friday pointed out that the home has been searched three times since Hailey's disappearance on Dec. 27.
Experts have long known that journalistic coverage of breaking news during an active investigation is a difficult assignment. Some in the news media, in a competitive environment, will rush to release scraps of information – occasionally before the facts are confirmed.
Kenneth Pybus, media law specialist and journalism faculty member at Abilene Christian University, said part of the problem comes from the tension that exists between differing roles and responsibilities of those involved.
"One of the challenges is that you have competing interests: the sources involved, the media and the law enforcement," he said. "The media are trying to quickly put out information to the public. Law enforcement is trying to find and protect evidence, see that justice is served and, sometimes, protect privacy.
"The media often frustrate law enforcement, and law enforcement often frustrates the media," he said. "And both often frustrate the sources that are involved in the incident."
Nevertheless, he said, journalists "have a responsibility to be as accurate as possible. In the end they can only report what they've been told. Sometimes they wind up repeating false information."

The disappearance of Colorado City 13-year-old Hailey Dunn once again took center stage on HLN's "Nancy Grace" show Thursday evening.
Among the guests were Billie and Clint Dunn, separated parents of Hailey Dunn, and KTAB's Priscilla Luong.

According to Billie Dunn, she was questioned for 10-12 hours on Wednesday night after admittedly failing a polygraph test. Dunn explained the details of the polygraph testing on Thursday night's "Nancy Grace" broadcast.

A possible break in the case of missing Colorado City teen Hailey Dunn came today as a member of a civilian search party found a pair of sunglasses and a knife-cover in a creek north of the city.

Midlander Holly Jenkins spotted the knife-cover in Morgan Creek in Dunn, Texas, a small town north of Colorado City.

Jenkins reached into the water and retrieved the cover before placing it on the ground along the wooded shore area.

San Angelo woman mobilizes to help search for missing girl

SAN ANGELO, Texas — A former Colorado City woman living in San Angelo is trying to get together a group to search for Hailey Dunn, a 13-year-old girl who went missing on the afternoon of Dec. 27.

Last seen in Colorado City, the teenager has been the object of an intensive search, with law enforcement entities and volunteers combing the area around Colorado City.

Colorado City is on Interstate 20 about 75 miles north of San Angelo.

Authorities said Dunn, who went missing the afternoon of December 27, was expected to visit her father and then spend the night with a friend. Her mother, Billie Dunn, reported her daughter missing the following day when it became clear she hadn’t made it to either location.

Melissa Jo Walker, now of San Angelo, said her plan is to car-pool to Colorado City, coordinate with the existing search team and work their way back to San Angelo, searching the areas between..

Thanks for the updates Ann-Tx. Multiple media sources also reported today that community volunteers have started door to door searches in Hailey's neighborhood and that Texas Equusearch is now on standby. Praying that the extra focus and resources bring Hailey home safely and quickly.

Officials: "We're Still Hoping to Find Hailey Alive"

"We're still hoping to find Hailey alive somewhere," said Senior Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Sparky Dean.
That was the underlying message during a news conference Friday afternoon in Colorado City concerning the disappearance of 13-year-old Hailey Dunn.

"We're looking at anybody, we're looking at everybody," said Dean. "We aren't focused on one person or one or two people. There's no smoking gun out there."

Dean urged for patience from the public as it concerns locating evidence or pinpointing suspects.
