New Braunfels toddler still missing

The search for a New Braunfels toddler missing since Friday night transitioned from search and rescue to recovery, authorities said early Sunday.
After being missing for more than 36 hours, authorities said that weather conditions and the time that Joshua Davis Jr., 18 months old, has been missing forced them to alter their strategy and downgrade hopes the child could be found safe.

Sunday a.m.: 18-month-old child still missing; search now 'in recovery mode'

New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung - New Braunfels, TX

NEW BRAUNFELS — Searchers in southeast New Braunfels were unable to locate 18-month old Joshua Davis overnight — and police say they're transitioning from a search-and-rescue mission to a "recovery mode."

New Braunfels Police Department Lt. Michael Penshorn, during an 8 a.m. Sunday press briefing, said the decision was made to switch to recovery mode because of the length of time the boy has been missing and because of the freezing and near-freezing temperatures that have been experienced since the boy was last seen at his home in the 2600 block of Savannah Hill Circle on Friday evening.

Hopes dim for missing tot
Cadaver-search dogs are brought in by authorities.
By Guillermo X. Garcia

Under clear, sunny skies, cadaver-search K-9 teams fanned out across a narrow area of rough terrain in south New Braunfels near the Guadalupe County line Sunday morning.
The sometimes frantic search-and-rescue operation for 18-month-old Joshua Davis Jr. had just transitioned into a recovery effort.
Meanwhile, a frustrated Sabrina Benitez cried for her child missing since Friday night, pleaded for his safe return and refused to give up hope even as she sought to alert authorities to a person she suspects of wrongdoing.
But while Benitez and her boyfriend believe someone may have taken their child for unknown reasons, authorities said nothing indicates foul play.

SAN ANTONIO -- On Sunday, a mother and father prepare to go to bed with their toddler missing for a third straight night.
It was an emotional day for the parents of Joshua Davis Jr. First, authorities reported that their missing son might be dead. Then rumors surfaced that claimed the boy was found. However, this news ended up being false.
“I went to sleep and all I could hear was my baby crying and calling for mommy,” Sabrina Benitez said.
Sabrina Benitez has not experienced a good night’s rest in days since the mysterious disappearance of her 18-month-old son Joshua Davis Jr.
Authorities believe the toddler wandered away from his Savannah Hill Circle home Friday night.
“I just want to know he’s okay and that he’s still alive,” Benitez said.
Sunday proved to be an emotional roller coaster ride for the family. After 36-hours that spanned two evenings of sub-freezing temperatures, New Braunfels Police transitioned their search and rescue operation to a recovery effort. They fear the child could not withstand such harsh elements.

NEW BRAUNFELS — The search for missing tot Joshua Davis Jr. intensified and shifted focus Tuesday from a recovery effort to a full-blown investigation.

It began at 2:30 p.m., as a Department of Public Safety helicopter began hovering behind the house, in a mobile home community on the town's far south side.

At the same time, a white truck pulled up in the driveway of the home where the 18-month-old boy disappeared Friday night.

~Snipped~

At the same time, a white truck pulled up in the driveway of the home where the 18-month-old boy disappeared Friday night.

Plainclothes investigators got out, went to the backyard and returned a few minutes later carrying a large item or items wrapped in black plastic. After loading the bundle into the back of the truck, they drove off.

The helicopter made a few larger circles around the neighborhood before leaving.

“Although we are still searching, we are shifting more toward an investigation,” said Lt. Michael Penshorn of the New Braunfels Police Department. “We'll still search, but we're going to focus more on other areas of interest.”

Those areas included forensic evidence as well as statements from the family and friends, Police Chief Thomas Wibert said.

“It's a process of elimination,” he said. “If you're looking in every place you can look, and you find nothing, then it has to be something else.”

Police spoke to the child's pediatrician Tuesday, Penshorn said, and concluded that the child's survivability window in last weekend's subfreezing weather was only 24 hours. Armed with that information and the failure of numerous searches to find the boy, authorities now deem it less likely that he wandered off and died in the elements.

It seems that LE doesn't think little Joshua wandered off.

NEW BRAUNFELS — Stymied in their search for missing tot Joshua Davis Jr., police are letting state and federal investigators take a second look at the case.

More than two dozen federal agents and a contingent of Texas Rangers are now part of the investigation, said Lt. Michael Penshorn of the New Braunfels Police Department.

An FBI forensics team visited the family's home, in a mobile home community on the town's far South Side, to retrace the steps and evidence-gathering of the first responders, who showed up minutes after the boy vanished Friday night.

I don't see anything bad in these parents' eyes. The children in the photos don't seem to have that haunted look either. I tend to believe he either wandered off or someone who knows them came in and took him.

I am leaning towards wandering off. He's just a toddler and he has asthma. If he went out the door, he easily could have disappeared quickly, and possible fallen in a hole somewhere. That could trigger an asthma attack, or he could have hit his head, even. Many places have abandoned wells that are not covered all that good. As sad as that would be, it would be easier than thinking someone intentionally harmed him.

'Stressful roller-coaster ride': Boy's family remains hopeful

The search area for a missing New Braunfels toddler has been expanded to include a two-mile radius around his home.

Police say that’s a lot of ground to cover for 18-month-old Joshua Davis Jr., who quite literally disappeared.

“It’s been a stressful roller-coaster ride, just wondering how it could happen," said the boy's father, Joshua Davis Sr.

The little boy's disappearance has puzzled law enforcement for almost a week and has kept his family on a mission.
