A year later, New Braunfels police say search for missing toddler, truth continues

Joshua Davis Jr. went missing from his New Braunfels home in February 2011, when he was 18 months old. His mother, Sabrina Benitez, says she is keeping the faith that Joshua will be found safe.

Seven adults were present around the time Joshua Davis Jr. went missing from his New Braunfels home last year. A New Braunfels police official said Wednesday that detectives now believe that some of them haven't told the truth about what happened that night.

The 18-month-old vanished the night of Feb. 4. Texas Rangers, FBI and hundreds of volunteers scoured adjacent fields and pockets of dense thickets near the subdivision where Joshua lived. It had snowed that morning and there were fears that Joshua, who has asthma, was lost in the dark. Neighbors' homes were searched.

But no body was found.

"There were seven adults in the house that night, and several of them have been less than truthful with investigators," New Braunfels police Capt. John McDonald said.

McDonald would not say how many and which family members police suspect didn't tell the truth and would not say why detectives believe so.

He said that the department isn't ready to solve the case but that new information, which he did not disclose, suggests that Joshua may be dead.

I posted the following on The Hinky Meter by Valhall - Developing Stories:

RE: Joshua Davis, Jr. - Missing - New Braunfels, Tx

Saturday will be one year that Joshua Davis, Jr. went missing from his home in New Braunfels, Tx. I remember it as if it were yesterday.

Joshua's disappearance was a breaking news story in my area as well as New Braunfels, San Antonio and Austin, Tx areas (per friends living in those areas).

It was memorable because we had a real hard freeze and icy conditions. In fact, the porch and steps at the home where Joshua went missing were still iced. Initially, the parents said Joshua just disappeared with 7 adults in the small home! The mother said Joshua could not reach the door knob to open the door.

A very extensive search ensued by the New Braunfels Police Dept (NBPD), Comal County Sheriff's Office, Texas Rangers and the FBI. They searched for several days by foot and air. They used search dogs, helicopters, drones, etc.

As time went on, the parents were guests on a Blog Talk Radio Show, Bring Them Home. On that show, they indicated that a friend of theirs from Houston (I think he was 19 or 20) was at their home earlier that evening and was drinking. They felt that maybe he took Joshua when he left.

In articles by local media, the New Braunfels Police Dept. officer spokesman said they interviewed the guy and he is not a suspect in the case.

Joshua's father, Joshua Davis, Sr., took a polygraph but Joshua's mother, Sabrina Benitez, was pregnant and within a few weeks of delivery. Law enforcement declined to polygraph her, at the time, because of her pregnancy.

In an article published by a newspaper in Austin, Tx yesterday, a Captain with NBPD said there were 7 adults in the home when Joshua went missing and several of them have been less than truthful with the investigators.

NEW BRAUNFELS — A year after Joshua Davis Jr. vanished from his family's rural home, investigators say inconsistent and misleading statements by some of those present the night he disappeared are impeding efforts to determine the fate of the missing boy.

“There were seven people in the house, and some of them have been truthful and some have not,” said Capt. John McDonald of the New Braunfels police, who are being assisted by the FBI and Texas Rangers.
