State prepares to rest case in Casey Anthony trial

Last Updated: Wednesday, June 15, 2011 5:04 AM

The prosecution says it expects to rest its case following a few housekeeping matters in the murder trial of Casey Anthony, the Florida mother accused of killing her 2-year-old daughter.

State attorneys say they only have to introduce a few pieces of evidence Wednesday that are left over from earlier in its case and then it will be done. The defense says it will be ready to call its first witness Thursday, but only if a standard motion asking the judge to throw out the case is denied.

But prosecutors still haven't brought in some key evidence, or some important witnesses, including Casey’s ex-boyfriend, her jail-house friend and the man who found Caylee's remains.

WFTV legal analyst Bill Sheaffer said prosecutors still have a few tricks up their sleeves.

He said he believes that the state is not calling all of its witnesses yet, instead waiting to use specific people to rebut the defense’s case after they're done calling their witnesses.

Jesse Grund was once engaged to Casey and before a DNA test ruled him out, he was once believed to be Caylee's father.

In the past he's offered telling testimony about Casey and he is on the witness list, but hasn't taken the stand yet.

Another possible witness is Casey’s pen-pal, Robyn Adams.

She's serving a prison term, but she is back at the Orange County Jail, likely waiting to be called as a witness.

Now will the Defense put on a case? And take the chance of the Prosecution blowing holes in it in Rebuttal? Or will they drop it and just hope the jury will think the Prosecution tried KC on a murder wrap knowing full well it was a accident but chose to ignore it?

Casey Anthony trial: Acquittal denied; defense introduces convict Vasco Thompson

The defense filing in court documents says Vasco Thompson is a 'recently discovered witness through the ongoing efforts of defense investigators'

By Anthony Colarossi, Orlando Sentinel

3:11 p.m. EDT, June 15, 2011

On the same day Chief Judge Belvin Perry denied a defense motion for acquittal, Casey Anthony's team introduced a new person to the murder case — an Orlando felon with a violent past.

The defense team's amended witness list now includes Vasco Thompson, an Orlando felon convicted on kidnapping charges in 1988.

Court documents show Thompson is a "recently discovered witness through the ongoing efforts of defense investigators."

Thompson, according to the filing, "was connected to George Anthony through his cell phone records." Records show four calls between Caylee's grandfather and Thompson on July 14, 2008 — a day before Cindy Anthony reported Caylee's disappearance to the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

Wow! Interesting this Vasco Thompson guy.....well, certainly a phone number connected to this guy made its way to George's cell...but as the rest of the article says, it hasn't been disclosed who called who or the duration of the calls and from that article Thompson refused interview attempts by the defense and called law enforcement when questioned, the document shows.

Interesting but I'm not buying he took Caylee.

Back in the beginning when KC found her Baez so fast, I had wondered if she knew of him before she was arrested. She was indigent back then too, yet she went straight for a lawyer that was not pro bono for the indigent....and he took her case on a meager retainer fee (that of course KC didn't really have) but just the same he took the case on retainer for a small amount....and that's just wrong because of the charges against her when she was arrested that amount was no where near going to cover the legal fees associated with it.

Baez was clearly interested enough to not worry about the money....and I do wonder if it was the case or CASEy... he was interested in.

Anyway, it seems like Baez and KC have been ready to throw George under the bus for a long time...even though they just admitted it in Opening Statements, this has been their plan all along....and now for my conspiracy theorist mind to go wild! .....

If Baez or KC or someone somehow gave George's number to Thompson or vice versa....and the calls were made on July 14th....then Baez knew about Caylee before he was hired. And now Baez is bringing it up just in time? Well, actually no, Baez is silent on this one...it's Mason bringing it up. Hmmmm.....that's playing with fire but you never know.

I love guessing what's up with this multi-dimentional case....sorry. Very Happy

Vasco Thompson? I wonder if he worked with George at one of his security jobs or the car dealership. It will be interesting to see how these two met and just what their relationship is.

Lottie - I'm wondering the same things....I don't believe this man had anything to do with Caylee. Casey did this on her own. Maybe George had a nasty little drug habit, who knows what the case is. It is interesting he wouldn't speak to the defense and called the law. And if there were only 4 calls on one day and one day only...hmmm. Or maybe George was going to hire him to kidnap Casey!

Sheeesh! How many more things are they going to throw against the wall to see if something will stick? At this rate they may have the jury rolling on the floor peeing their pants from laughing at their theories!
