Nebraska Third-Grader Kerra Wilson Missing After Being Dropped Off At School By Stepfather



Kerra Wilson, age 8, was last seen in the north parking lot of Mitchell Elementary School in Mitchell, Nebraska around 8 a.m. Wednesday morning after being dropped off by her stepfather. She is 4’2”, weighs 78 pounds, and has shoulder length brown hair with red stripes in it.

A counselor said Kerra's teachers reported her absent at 8:15 a.m. Kerra's mother, Amanda Lopez, was notified of Kerra's absence Wednesday afternoon, and Kerra's grandmother reported her missing around 3 pm.

An Amber Alert wasn't issued because authorities say they have no information so far to lead them to believe Kerra was abducted. The search for Kerra is scheduled to resume this morning.

The teachers reported her absent at 8:15, but they didn't notify the mom until the afternoon? Since the school didn't get a call off from the mom, they should have checked with her way sooner than the "afternoon".

I was wondering about that Julie. That is too long of a lag time between noticing her absent and notifying her mother. There is no excuse for that, but sometimes there are conflicting reports when these cases first break and some of the information put out there in the various articles ends up being inaccurate.

True, but if the original info is accurate, then there's no excuse for them to wait that long. I'd be furious. I would hope to get the phone call at least within the first half hour to hour.

It's hard to say whether she wandered off or was abducted, but I wish they could issue an Amber Alert in this case.

I wonder if there were any other witnesses who saw Kerra in the school parking lot besides her stepfather. I hope HLN starts covering this case. Come next week, it looks like HLN is going to put all the missing children cases on the backburner because of the Dr. Conrad Murray trial.

I was wondering if Kerra was seen at the school too. It would be easy to make sure he was seen in the parking lot, as an alibi for later, if the stepfather had anything to do with it, which I'm not saying he did.

FBI joins search for 8-year-old Nebraska girl

MITCHELL, Neb. (AP) — The FBI has joined local and state law officers in trying to find an 8-year-old girl who was last seen in the parking lot of her Nebraska Panhandle school.

Here is a view of the parking lot. It looks like there is a clear view of the entrance from anywhere in the parking lot.

At our elementary school where Chase goes, you have to pull up to the side entrance, next to the cafeteria and the gym teacher opens your car door, lets your kid out and they have to go straight in the side door before you drive off. When picking up your kid, you have to line up from the highway, around the parking lot, to the front entrance. There are 3 spaces, #1, #2 and #3 with barrels there, and there is a teacher at each barrel. We have our kid's name on a card in the rear passenger window, the kid is called by walkie-talkies to a teacher inside, where all the car riders are sitting on the floor of the hallway. The inside teacher calls out the kids name, they go out to the teacher at your car, that teacher opens the rear car door and puts your child inside the car. Then they close the door.

All elementary schools should be set up with that system. All the kids are picked up and out of there within 20 minutes.

All teachers at his school have computers and cell phones, and mom's have to inform the teacher before school begins that the child will not be there that day. Their school begins @ 8:00am, and if a child is not there, and they have not received a message, the mom (or dad) will be notified immediately.

Mama, that's pretty much how our drop offs and pick ups are too.
I have no idea what time frame they would call if a child was absent without a call off.

Maybe you need to check with your school how they handle this if you don't call ahead of time.

Now the middle school here is different. You have to get in line and drive your child to the front door of the school, and there are two police officers standing there, but they don't get the kids out of the cars. On pick up, you just wait in line till you get in the drive to the school, but your kids can come out to your car as soon as they see it.

As soon as the teacher does her roll call and checks the kids that are not present, she sends the report to the office. If that parent has not called ahead, then the parent gets a message via text to her cell phone, or a message via e-mail by 8:30am.

I probably should check, but whoever drops them off sees them go into the school. So I never really thought about it or worried about it. But as we've seen in some of these cases, they never make it to the classrooms, unfortunately.

Julie, the only door at the elementary school that is unlocked at all times is the front door, that is right at the office. None of the other doors can be opened from the outside, except with a key card, which all the teachers carry on a leash-like band around their necks.

When Mr. Hefner gets the kids out of the cars, there is a teacher standing at the door to the building to let the kids inside. If I have to check Chase out early, I have to go to the office and using their computer, sign him out, and the computer takes a picture. He is in a different building than the main one, so his teacher's aide has to walk him to the main building, unlock the side door and walk him to the office and turn him over to me. I cannot go to his classroom to get him.

However, if I am going to his class as an aide, I still have to sign in at the office, get a visitor's badge with my picture on it. Then someone from the office has to walk me to the building Chase is in, unlock the door and walk with me to his classroom. When I am done, I have to be escorted back to the office, (so they can unlock the door for me at the main building) and I have to sign out. Every week, they print out all the comings and goings from that computer and keep them locked up.

Yours has more security measures than mine, but I am comfortable with the procedures that they do have. Schools have to take more precautions nowadays than when I was in school. It's pretty sad how things have changed.

I'm confused after watching the Nancy Grace clip. The stepfather said he dropped her off at the school, but no cameras picked her up on school grounds. Then there are witnesses who saw her across the street from the school outside of the Subway without her stepfather, but no Subway workers saw her. According the the witnesses, they saw her headed back towards the school, but as we know, she never made it.

That is weird. Why would she go sit outside at a Subway restaurant?

I wonder if a crossing guard can verify she made it back onto school grounds?
