Missing Arizona Girl Jahessye Shockley: Mother Arrested

Jerice Hunter, the mother of missing 5-year-old Jahessye Shockley of Phoenix, was arrested Monday on charges of child abuse “directly related to her daughter Jahessye,” according to the Glendale, Ariz., Police Department.

The police and FBI served a second search warrant on Hunter’s apartment complex, where Jahessye disappeared Oct. 11, and arrested Hunter there.

Glendale Police Department spokeswoman Tracey Breeden told ABCNews.com that according to information authorities have received but cannot disclose, “It’s highly unlikely we’ll find Jahessye alive.”

Document details abuse in Ariz. missing-girl case

PHOENIX (AP) - November 22, 2011 (WPVI) -- The teenage sister of a missing 5-year-old Arizona girl told police her mother instructed her to lie about the girl's disappearance, that her mother kept the girl in a closet, and that the girl had cuts and bruises before she was reported missing, according to a court document released Tuesday.

The document was released minutes after the girl's mother, Jerice Hunter, had her first court appearance, during which she proclaimed her innocence.

I've just read the police report and even though I've always believed that Jerice did something to Jhessye, I'm absolutely horrified to learn just how cruel she is.

I know parents do terrible things to their children, and I know they hurt them again and again ... and yet, each time I read something like this, it's as if it's the first time I'm discovering how cruel and brutal people can be.

It horrifying to know the extent that Jhessye suffered and to know the scars that her siblings will carry with them for the rest of their lives knowing that their mother caused such pain, suffering, terror, rejection and torture to their 5 yo little sister. I'm also convinced that at other times, this brutal behaviour was directed at them.

For all those people ... pastors and family members who are advocating that Jerice is innocent despite the first hand accounts from her own children - SHAME ON YOU!!!!!

After the last time that Jerice was arrested for child abuse ... her children should never have been returned to her. Also, when I think about all the noise she was making about Jhessye being missing ... it makes my blood boil.

Jerice Hunter Released From Jail, Daughter Still Missing

Posted by Sarah Long on November 28, 2011 6:39 PM

Jerice Hunter, the mother of a missing five-year-old Arizona girl, was released from jail Monday morning when charges against her failed to be filed on time.

Prosecutors, who didn't file child abuse charges within the 48-hour time limit of Hunter's first court appearance, say they want to wait for more information from the police investigation into Jhessye Shockley's disappearance, the Washington Post reports.

Proving murder without 5-year-old's body a challenge
Authorities say missing Glendale 5-year-old was killed

Jhessye Shockley

Police suspect that a 5-year-old Glendale girl who went missing a few months ago is dead, her body callously disposed of and probably lying buried beneath tons of trash in a giant landfill.

If Jhessye Shockley's body is not found, bringing a killer to justice will be a daunting task. But experts say it is not impossible.

Across the nation, prosecutors have won murder convictions in dozens of cases in which there was no victim's body. In the past year, the Maricopa County Attorney's Office successfully prosecuted two such cases.

Glendale police will start searching a landfill south of the Valley for Jhessye Shockley's body on Feb. 6.

Five-year-old Jhessye was reported missing Oct. 11. Weeks later, police said they did not expect to find the girl alive and said the girl's mother, Jerice Hunter, was their primary focus in their investigation of Jhessye's disappearance.

KNXV - Phoenix, AZ

GLENDALE, AZ - The attorney in the case of Jhessye Shockley is questioning why police are choosing now to begin searching a huge landfill south of Phoenix for the missing 5-year-old Glendale girl.

Attorney Scott Maasen tells The Associated Press if police had information the child is out there, why would they wait weeks and weeks to begin searching.

Landfill search for Jhessye is under way

Updated: Feb 06, 2012 10:22 AM CST

KPHO - Phoenix, AZ

MOBILE, AZ (CBS5) -
The search for 5-year-old Jhessye Shockley has started at Butterfield Landfill in Mobile.

The search began at 7 a.m. with a team of more than 40 people, including the FBI and the Child Abduction Response Team. Jhessye was reported missing Oct. 11.

"The technology that's in place right now puts us into a better position to be successful than in landfill efforts in the past just because we are in a position where there's much more scientific analysis that's able to be done in this particular situation," said Sgt. Brent Coombs of the Glendale Police Department.

I cannot believe that Jerice Hunter is still free. It's so frustrating that children can be disposed of so easily and the low life parent is never held acccountable due to a lack of evidence. What about the testimony of her other children who are in foster care? Surely that stands for something?
