Therapy dog program helps prosecutors in court

Jan 22, 2012 12:00am

NECN - Newton, MA

MANASSAS, Va. (AP) — The little girl had already confided in a psychologist, a doctor and her family.

At 7 years old, she struggled to recount the trauma of sexual assault again and again, this time for Prince William County prosecutors. But when it came time for trial, the girl was ready. She testified via closed-circuit television and helped lock up her attacker for eight years.

And while it was ultimately the girl's strength and support from her family that brought her through, she also got help along the way from an unexpected source: an imposing-looking but wholly affable German shepherd named Abby.

"This is the hardest thing these kids will go through in their entire life," said the girl's mother. Knowing Abby would be there during visits to the prosecutor's office made going a little easier, the mother said.

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -
A Great Dane did a great deed and saved a woman's life.

And now he may save other women's lives, or at least give them a harbor in the domestic violence storm.

Last year, a woman desperately called the Rose Brooks Center after her boyfriend nearly beat her to death with a hammer. As the man struck the woman with both ends of the hammer, the Great Dane leaped into the fray.

The dog jumped in and laid across the woman and absorbed most of the blows until the man threw her and the dog from a second-story window.

Julie, thanks for posting the article about Byron. The college student needs to have his scholarship pulled and be kicked out of UIC.

I am so glad the charges were upgraded to a felony. Thumbs up to the judge!

Second and third degree burns are what Byron sustained. The pain and suffering . . . . how very cruel of the student.

The good news is Byron's been adopted and hopefully will be in a loving home.

Get well soon, Byron!

6 new breeds debut at Westminster dog show, but history shows rookies face long odds to win

The Washington Post - Washington, D.C.
By Associated Press, Published: January 24

LOS ANGELES — Six dogs will make history this year as the newest breeds eligible to compete at Westminster. If they have visions of winning, though, history is against them.

The names of some of these rookie breeds competing in this year’s Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show on Feb. 13-14 at Madison Square Garden are a mouthful: the Entlebucher (ent-lee-BOO’-kehr) mountain dog, the Norwegian Lundehund (LUHN’-dee-hund), the American English coonhound, the Finnish Lapphund (LAP’-hundh), the Cesky (CHESS’-key) terrier and the Xoloitzcuintli (show-low-itz-QUINT’-lee), previously known as the Mexican Hairless.

MERRIAM, KS (KCTV) -

An adorable young dog made his way last Wednesday to the Heartland SPCA shelter.

Grizz had a microchip and the Merriam shelter began working to identify his owners.

The number associated with the microchip had been disconnected.

"However, we were successful in contacting the animal shelter where the dog was microchipped," Intake Coordinator Wendy Blair said. "They had a valid contact information for his owners."
