Earlier this week, Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia presented retirement badges K-9 deputies Kanau and Elmo, which each spent five years with the organization.

The dogs were joined by their colleagues in a retirement reception at the HCSO's District 5 patrol substation honoring their service.

Elmo leaves with an impressive 82 suspect captures and seizures resulting in 12,000 pounds of marijuana, 350 kilos of cocaine, 13.7 kilos of methamphetamine, 1 kilo of heroine, 5 vehicles, and a whopping $5.2 million in cash.

This Texas story has a happy ending. "Brownie" is the hero because he protected
3-year-old Zoey Smith while she was lost in the woods for about 6 hours. She was alone only with her dog, Brownie.

DALLAS - A Texas family says their pet pit bull helped protect their missing 3-year-old after she wandered away and got lost in the woods.

Little Zoey Smith is bubbly and chatty. It’s hard to tell she survived the six-hour ordeal alone with only her dog Brownie.

“I’m so glad that we found her and that she came back because that usually doesn’t happen. And, she’s my angel and I wouldn’t know what to do without her,” said Stephanie Smith, the girl’s mother.

Dog stolen during home burglary in NW Houston

Sunday, February 05, 2012

KTRK - Houston, Tx

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- After a burglary, a local couple says they feel like a member of their family is missing.

You hear about burglars stealing televisions, stereo systems or -- in this case -- even a custom-made guitar. But there is only one thing that was taken that the Covingtons want back: their three-year-old dog, Charlie.

Wes and Hannah Covington are a young couple without children, and their pets are important to them.

Oh my. May they get their "baby" back!

Hard times mean that healthy looking animals will be stolen. Not for resale, though, but for training pit bulls to fight in the pit. Thats where the big money is at and if they can find a free animal to train their dogs...

Well, that is what is happening in my neck of the woods. We are being warned not to leave our pets in the car/truck for even a minute. Regard it as if one was leaving their infant in the car.

Sherry, thanks for the info. We have not had that problem in our area but it is something to think about.

We watch our little boy closely. Whenever he goes to town with me or hubby, we make sure the vehicle doors are locked.

Of course, we leave the windows down a little for him to have air. In the summer, he does not get to go unless one of us will stay in the vehicle with the A/C running for our little boy!

Hubby takes our little boy for a ride nearly every day. He loves to ride "shotgun" with hubby! lol They are a well known sight in our area. It is heart warming to see those two go down the road together.

Oh, Ann, dogs love to go for rides!

My sweet little poodle, Dinky, would be so close to me that he was always underfoot...except when daddy was going to drive somewhere in the truck. Then I was of no good use!~ lol!

This is an amazing story about a diabetic alert dog, Splenda, and a 6 year old Type 1 diabetic boy, Landon Lischka. It was on our local news the other night. A little boy in the greater Houston area (Bellville, Austin County, Tx) will be getting this dog.

I hope the little boy can enjoy more independence. Without a doubt, this dog will become his best friend and companion!

Wishing the best for Landon Lischka and his soon to be dog, Splenda!

There are two videos on the website. I will post one. Please see Link below.

Houston-Area Family Gains Diabetic Alert Dog: MyFoxHOUSTON.com

HOUSTON - We were thrilled when we had the opportunity to make the announcement on air at FOX 26 that a diabetic alert dog could be a very real possibility for a local family in need. It all started with the dream of the owners of Canine Country Club in Katy. They are in the process of training a dog to sniff out low blood sugar levels, and they wanted to give their special dog to a deserving family.

Jeff and Adrienne Murphrey are accustomed to teaching dogs better manners. This time, they are training a dog to possibly save someone's life. The Murphreys put out a request for families to come forward, who were struggling with the difficulties of Type 1 Diabetes.

Dogs, owners training as part of Cape County's new search and rescue unit

Monday, February 20, 2012

By Patrick T. Sullivan ~ Southeast Missourian
Cape Girardeau, MO

Gary Sappington and his 8-month-old German shepherd, Zara, meet
for training with members of the Cape Girardeau County Search and
Rescue K9 unit Sunday at Cape County Park North. Unit chief Scott
Fornkohl, left, opened the meeting.

(Fred Lynch)

More than a dozen dogs ran, jumped and sniffed their way through a portion of Cape County Park on Sunday afternoon. Some timid pups stayed close to their owners, while older dogs ventured into the park's forest. The typical barks and whimpers filled the air, and dog treats and tennis balls were plentiful.
But this was not a normal Sunday frolic; it was practice for potential heroes.

The 14 dogs and their owners were training as a part of the Cape Girardeau County Search and Rescue K9 Unit, a newly formed volunteer team that will be used to find missing people, both dead and alive.
