Toronto Police Make Arrest in 1981 Slaying

Toronto police announced Friday they have charged a man in the 30-year-old murder of Donna Anne Proian, a secretary who originally hailed from Estevan, Sask.

Police charged Ernest Westergard, 60, with first-degree murder on Friday.

Proian, 30, was found dead in her penthouse apartment on St. Patrick Street on June 23, 1981. Det. Sgt. Steve Ryan refused to comment about specifics of the case but said Westergard was a next-door neighbour of Proian and had been "on the radar right from the beginning of the investigation."

God Bless those Mounties...They got another one....Wonder if DNA had a role in it??? They aren't saying, but sure the info will come out sooner or later...

That was good news Estee, you are right it could have been the DNA that they can check now that they could not in 1981.

Wow, the guy is now 60 years old, but he got to live his life for the past 30 years, and Donna didn't. My daughter was murdered on Mar. 11, 1981, and her husband is already out of prison, returned for another 12 years for selling drugs and weapons and is now a free man. Doesn't seem fair.

I believe in an eye for an eye. If you take someone's life, you should never be able to walk the streets as a free person again.

Aww Mama sorry to hear about your daughter that is shocking, he should have served life for what he did. Sometimes you wonder why these things happen to good people, This man that killed Donna, he probably thought he had got away with it, maybe this will be put the fear into those who have already killed that they will be caught next.
