The Putnam County Sheriff's Office has released more information about the mystery note that was dropped off last week regarding the Haleigh Cummings search.
The note was dropped off by an unknown woman Wednesday at the St. Augustine Record newspaper.
Detectives determined the note warranted further investigation, so they announced they wanted to speak with the woman who dropped it off.
The woman later contacted detectives and they interviewed her. Her name has still not been released, and she said she was just dropping the note off for someone else.
This morning, detectives told 97.3 The Sky the note contained information about a possible burial site for Haleigh, the girl who disappeared from her Satsuma home in February.
Capt. Dick Schauland with the Putnam County Sheriff's Office says detectives followed up the tip, but found nothing.

Oh, rats. I was hoping it was something good. I guess if you had something good, you would go to the police, not the newspaper.

Two down 3,998 to go. I wish some of these tips were legitimate. I wonder if somebody is sending LE on a wild goose chase.

A few of us were saying on a thread about another false tip that the people intentionally providing false leads should be charged. I'm not sure if they can be charged, but you would think so. False tips take valuable time out of the search and waste taxpayers' money.

Here's a news release from the Putman County Sheriff's Office.
Last Wednesday (09/23/09) an unidentified woman stopped at the offices of the St. Augustine Record and dropped off a letter containing a tip as to the whereabouts of missing Haleigh Cummings. Detectives determined that the information in the letter needed further clarification, and Friday the video of the woman arriving at the St. Augustine Record was distributed to the media. The woman learned that the Sheriff’s Office’s needed to talk to her, and came to the Sheriff’s Office Friday afternoon.
The letter contained information about a possible burial site for Haleigh Cummings, the six year old girl reported missing from Satsuma, Florida. Detectives thoroughly followed up on the information provided, but the tip did not lead to Haleigh. This tip, as have the other more than 4,000 received in this case, has thus far not led to the recovery of Haleigh.
The woman who delivered the tip informed detectives that she was a messenger delivering the information for someone else. Her name, as well as the location of the burial site, is not being released.

Since the woman delivering the "Tip" has been spoken to, I would hope that LE makes her tell WHO she was delivering the letter for. I would also hope that this person is prosecuted for giving false information.

Would it be okay to use water boarding to start making people talk? Probably not, but somebody needs to light a fire down there.

It's a bit hard to believe that this woman was delievering the tip from an 80 year old man and I hope to God that LE checked into this man. Maybe he's one of Satsuma's MANY sex offenders??

ST. AUGUSTINE, FL -- The letter dropped off at the St. Augustine Record by a mystery woman provided investigators with step by step instructions to find the grave of Haleigh Cummings.
The St. Augustine Record, our news partner, has now published the entire contents of the letter it received last week.
Investigators on Monday said the letter contained specific information about a site where Haleigh may be buried.
The St. Augustine Record reports in today's edition just how specific:
"Check the back of father's mobile home. From the right end of the mobile home extending out continue for 540 yards straight. At that point go north 12 yards. Dig 2-3 feet, will strike metal covering an old well, check inside, black plastic garbage bag. Circumstances extend statewide and beyond."
The typewritten letter, according to the St. Augustine Record, is signed by the initials "SAM."
Investigators told First Coast News they searched the area but nothing came up. The Putnam County Sheriff's Office also said the area had been searched before.
A woman dressed in what appeared to be blue hospital scrubs handed the letter to the receptionist at the St. Augustine Record on Sept. 23.
The Putnam County Sheriff's Office said Monday the woman told investigators she worked as a messenger for an older man who had once been an FBI informant. The unidentified woman also told investigators the man had some "special abilities." Capt. Dick Schauland, a spokesman for the sheriff's office, wouldn't elaborate on whether those abilities meant "psychic abilities."
"We have not talked to him," said Schauland. "We've asked her to bring him in. I don't know if she'll be able to or not."
Haleigh Cummings has been missing since the night of Feb. 9. Misty Croslin-Cummings told detectives she put Haleigh to bed around 8 p.m. The teen wife of Haleigh's father said she woke up around 3 a.m. and noticed Haleigh had disappeared.

Re: Contents of Letter Dropped Off at Newspaper Revealed
IMO, it is absolutely ridiculous to actually think that LE has NOT spoken to the man who supposedly gave the letter to this woman. Am I the only one who thinks that this is completely assinine? Especially knowing WHAT was in the letter? If LE did not find this man and interview him asap, they are even more stupid that I thought. It actually pisses me off to think that they could have possible not spoken to this man. Hoax or not.

This retired "FBI" informant with "special abilities", well, hmmm. Don't think they found what they were looking for....
And he's supposedly in his eighties. Not that I'm THAT much younger
but why wouldn't he just give the info to LE himself and not get some woman in scrubs to "drop it off"??
